ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the efficacy of Chinese plaster containing rhubarb and mirabilite on surgical site infection (SSI) in patients with cesarean delivery (CD) by performing a randomized controlled trial.@*METHODS@#This randomized controlled trial included 560 patients with CD due to fetal head descent enrolled at a tertiary teaching center between December 31, 2018 and October 31, 2021. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to a Chinese medicine (CM) group (280 cases) or a placebo group (280 cases) by a random number table, and were treated with CM plaster (made by rhubarb and mirabilite) or a placebo plaster, respectively. Both courses of treatment lasted from the day 1 of CD, followed day 2 until discharge. The primary outcome was the total number of patients with superficial, deep and organ/space SSI. The secondary outcome was duration of postoperative hospital stay, antibiotic intake, and unplanned readmission or reoperation due to SSI. All reported efficacy and safety outcomes were confirmed by a central adjudication committee that was unaware of the study-group assignments.@*RESULTS@#During the recovery process after CD, the rates of localized swelling, redness and heat were significantly lower in the CM group than in the placebo group [7.55% (20/265) vs. 17.21% (47/274), P<0.01]. The durution of postoperative antibiotic intake was shorter in the CM group than in the placebo group (P<0.01). The duration of postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in the CM group than in the placebo group (5.49 ± 2.68 days vs. 8.96 ± 2.35 days, P<0.01). The rate of postoperative C-reactive protein elevation (≽100 mg/L) was lower in the CM group than in the placebo group [27.6% (73/265) vs. 43.8% (120/274), P<0.01]. However, there was no difference in purulent drainage rate from incision and superficial opening of incision between the two groups. No intestinal reactions and skin allergies were found in the CM group.@*CONCLUSIONS@#CM plaster containing rhubarb and mirabilite had an effect on SSI. It is safe for mothers and imposes lower economic and mental burdens on patients undergoing CD. (Registration No. ChiCTR2100054626).

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the prevalence trend and survival of liver cancer in Yangpu District, Shanghai, from 2002 to 2016. Methods:Data on liver cancer incidence and mortality from 2002 to 2016 were collected from the Shanghai cancer registry system for the registered population in Yangpu District and the number of the registered population published by the public security department. The standardized liver cancer incidence and mortality rates were calculated using the world standard population to analyze the trends of the liver cancer incidence and mortality, in general, by gender and by age. Life table method was used to calculate the survival rate, and log-rank test was used to analyze the difference of 5-year survival rates and the period of diagnosis between patients with liver cancer by gender. Results:The overall incidence and mortality of liver cancer showed a decreasing trend from 2002 to 2016. After removing the influence of community aging, the standardized annual percentage change (APC) of morbidity and mortality was -3.10% (P<0.01) and -3.44% (P<0.01), respectively. The morbidity and mortality of males were significantly higher than that of females (P<0.01) by Z test. The incidence of liver cancer started to rise obviously from 40 years old, and the death rate raised obviously from 50 years old. 4 007 liver cancer patients were followed up for 5 years. The 5 years observed survival rate was 12.45%, and the median survival time was 281.48 days. The 5-year survival rate of male liver cancer patients was higher than that of female patients, and there was a significant difference(P<0.01).46.58% of liver cancer patients were diagnosed in the advanced stage, and only 13.46% was diagnosed at the early-stage. There was no statistical difference in the proportion between men and women at different stages (P=0.11). Conclusion:The overall incidence and mortality rates of liver cancer from 2002 to 2016 show a slowly decreasing trend, with higher incidence and mortality rates in men than in women. Middle-aged and elderly people are still the main population of morbidity and death. The five-year survival rate is low, and the diagnostic periods are mostly in the middle and late stages of cancer.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the analgesic effects and sites of oxymatrine-carbenoxolone sodium complex (OCSC).

METHODAdopting formalin test, warm water tail-flick test and intracerebroventricularly (icv) injection to observe the analgesic effects of OCSC in mice.

RESULTIntraperitoneally injecting (ip) OCSC (75, 150 mg x kg(-1)) remarkedly inhibited the pain of mice in the formalin test and prolonged latent phases of tail-shrinking of mice, icy OCSC (1.875, 3.75, 7.5 mg x kg(-1)) significantly prolonged latent phases of tail-shrinking of mice, it had dose-dependent effect with concentration.

CONCLUSIONThe result indicated that OCSC has obvious analgesic effects and its mechanism may be involved in central nervous system (CNS).

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the analgesic effect of oxysophoridine(OSR)and the influence of verapamil(Ver)on the antinociception of OSR when two drugs were co-administrated in mice. Methods The number of writhing within 15 min after ip different doses of OSR was observed in painful mouse mo- dels caused by acetic acid. The hot plate method was used to assess nociceptive sensitivity of CaCl_2 and Ver before ip OSR.Nitric oxide(NO)in serum was measured by spectrophotometry. Results The number of writhing was decreased and the latency of licking the hind paws was prolonged in a dose-dependent manner after ip OSR.The antinociception of OSR could be antagonized by CaCl_2 and enhanced by Ver.No inter- ference was detected in serum volume of NO.Conclusion These results suggest that OSR can antagonize the acute pain caused by acetic acid and hot plate in a dose-dependent manner in mice.Calcium channel blocker could enhance the effect of OSR.
